"Human Traffic: China", a documentary film highlighting the plight of those abducted or forced into having sex and efforts to combat the scourge, was released on Sept 4.

The 36-minute documentary by MTV EXIT records three harrowing stories: a Chinese boy who was abducted for illegal adoption; a woman from Myanmar trafficked to China for a forced marriage; a girl from Vietnam forced to China to become a sex worker.

"Yunnan province and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region (both border areas) have the largest number of cases," said Guo Jia, who worked on the Project to Prevent Trafficking for Labor Exploitation in China with the International Labor Organization.

"The lure of job offers are frequently used to entice victims. And because China has such a big migrant population from rural areas, even a small percentage means a lot of victims.

"The best way to prevent this from happening is proper, preemptive education," she said. "A little knowledge can help people turn away from dangerous situations."

Matt Love, Director of MTV EXIT, said, through the documentary, that they hope "to educate young people on this critical social issue, and encourage audiences to take action if they suspect human trafficking is happening in their communities."

Han Geng, the singer who picked up a 2012 MTV Europe Music Award is the celebrity host for the film. The documentary can be found online at http://mtvexit.org/humantrafficchina/, the Chinese video portal tudou.com as well as Sina Weibo.
