BEIJING - Xinjiang is on the whole safe and stable, but facing severe challenges in maintaining social stability as its social management foundation is still weak, the head of Xinjiang government said Tuesday.

Xinjiang's security situation is under control and is getting better and better, said Nur Bekri, chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Government, when attending the ongoing parliamentary session in Beijing.

Stability is still the top priority for Xinjiang, said Nur Bekri, almost two years after a deadly riot rocked the ethnic region in China's far west.

The July 5 riot in the Xinjiang regional capital Urumqi in 2009 left 197 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.
