 Why the lion danced

The lion dance is one of the most popular folk dances in China. Provided to China Daily

Deep in the mountains of ancient China, every thirteenth moon the dreaded monster Nian pays a visit to the village. The villagers must protect themselves, but which animal can save them? Come and find out and help the villagers scare the monster away!

Join young Tom and his family as they prepare for New Year's Eve and discover the story behind the Lion Dance. All the excitement, colors and sounds of the Chinese New Year are brought to you in this inventive production featuring live music, song and dance by the award winning Yellow Earth Theatre Company.

Lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a costume.

The lion is operated by two performers who perform the entire dance with their faces covered, a testament to their skill.
