Top trademarks recognized

A hundred and twenty trademarks were recognized as having the most potential in China in 2013 by China Industry & Commerce News and China Consumers magazine at the end of last month. The trademarks were judged on their performance last year and 100 of them were home-developed. The half-year campaign received 666 trademark candidates from 30 provinces and regions across China. The trademarks covered 12 industries including electronics, clothing, cosmetics, furniture, jewelry and drinks.

Drive for academician workstations

The city's intellectual property office and association for science and technology plan to make more efforts to help the local patent demonstration companies establish academician workstations. The office said it would encourage IP organizations to provide targeted services to companies and workstations through match-up guidance and IP rights trust services. Nearly 40 local companies have established such workstations.

Fake expo merchandise seized

Enforcement officials in Qingdao seized more than 3,000 fake mascots and unlicensed products for this year's International Horticultural Exposition by the end of July. The local cultural market administration and the expo's organizing committee established a copyright workstation to deal with IP-related cases. The expo is being held in the city from April 25 to Oct 25 and is expected to attract 15 million visitors.

West China's first exchange center

The National Copyright Administration approved the establishment of a national-level copyright exchange center in the province, the first of its kind in western China. The center, jointly set up by the Shaanxi Cultural Industry Investment Holdings Co and Xi'an Television Copyright Exchange Center, aims to integrate copyright market resources and capital nationwide. It will also provide services including training, exhibitions, market investigation, publicity and project recommendation.

Online portal sells copyrights

Copyrights for 680 finished videos and 100,000 footage clips are being sold on an e-commerce platform that opened six months ago. Sales have so far reached 13 million yuan ($2.1 million). The Shanghai Media Group established the website and aimed to create a leading online shopping portal in China for the video copyright business. Copyright owners can entrust the company to sell their copyrights or open their own online stores.

Flash disc patent dispute

Shenzhen-based Netac Technology Co, inventor of the flash disc, filed a lawsuit against another local company, Infomicro Electronics Co, for allegedly using its patent to produce flash memory drives without authorization. Netac asked the defendant to pay 50 million yuan in compensation. It said patent licensing was an important part of the company's business and contributed to nearly 50 percent of its total revenue last year.

Micro-film contest makes debut

The China International Micro-Film Ceremony was held in the provincial capital Chengdu, the first city in western China to host the event. The organizing committee invites micro-films from across the world to compete for five awards and a prize worth 1 million yuan. Chengdu Cultural Equity Exchange Center provides copyright registration, trust and trade services for participants.

Service asks for public's help

People are being asked for their opinions on an awarding policy draft for providing information on patent infringements. The draft will be on the Hangzhou city government's website until Aug 7. Residents can inform the city's IP aid center or IP office of illegal behavior through a hotline, 12330-2, online, www.hzip.gov.cn, or by email, [email protected]. Informants could receive up to 300 yuan for providing valuable information. The new policy is scheduled to take effect on Oct 1.
