Watermelon festival opens in Baishuiyang

The second watermelon festival, sponsored by Fujian Baishuinongfu, was held from Aug 23-24 in Baishuiyang scenic spot, Pingnan county, Fujian province. The festival gave away free watermelon to almost 10,000 tourists.
The watermelon planting base of Fujian Baishuinongfu, located in Lingxia township, covers an area of 16,000 mu (1,067 hectares) and is 960 meters above sea level. The planting base is an agricultural demonstration district in Pingnan and an important watermelon supplier in eastern Fujian.
Since May 2012, researchers of Fujian's Academy of Agricultural Sciences have been contributing to the watermelon planting in the base. Thirteen new watermelon species, including black jade and WN9, were introduced into the planting base, after which more special species were cultivated.
The?special flavored sweet-sour watermelon won praise from the tourists during the two-day festival.
The first watermelon festival was held in 2012, and an exhibition of new watermelon species was held in August, 2013.
