Updated: 2015-10-27

Guangfu Temple is an important Lamaism center in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The temple is a Buddhist shrine and enjoys a similar reputation to Ta’er Temple in Qinghai province and the Labrang Monastery in Gansu province. The 9th Panchen Lama once preached here.

Construction on the temple began in 1702 after approval was granted by Emperor Kangxi. It took three years and two months to complete. Kangxi named it “Guangfu Temple” and inscribed the name in Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan and Chinese, along with his seal, on a horizontal board at the temple’s entrance.

The temple gradually developed into the largest lama temple in southern Inner Mongolia, receiving many disciples. Local people call it Bailing Temple.
