The municipal tourism bureau of the city of Datong, Shanxi province, has reported that it received 312,700 foreign tourists, this past year, for a year-on-year increase of 12.71 percent, and 23,245,600 Chinese, an increase of almost 23 percent. The 2013 National Tourist Satisfaction Survey of China's Tourism Research Institute has shown that, out of 60 sample cities, Datong's index was 72.43, putting it in 22nd place nationwide, compared to 36th place, in 2012.

The tourist satisfaction survey is an evaluation of travel agencies, restaurants, scenic spots, transportation, city management, sanitation, public services, shopping, accommodations, and entertainment.
