Boxing-Federation given US$400,000 of Olympic cash

Olympic chiefs handed over US$400,000 to boxing's governing body on Thursday after the federation addressed IOC concerns over the openness of scoring and refereeing.

A total of US$800,000 due to the boxing federation from the Athens Olympic Games had been withheld by the International Olympic Committee while it monitored three areas of concern, IOC communications director Giselle Davies told reporters.

"A lot of development was seen at the Asian Games in Doha," Davies said. "On that basis the IOC decided to hand over half the outstanding total.

"If further development is seen at the world championships later this year, the remaining $400,000 will be handed over."

Davies said the areas of concern had been the openness of scoring, the draw of judges and referees, and the system for selecting judges and referees for Olympic Games.

The world championships are due to be staged in a U.S. city later this year.

The International Boxing Association turned to the U.S. to stage the championships after South Korea declined an invitation to stage the event.

South Korea were given the option after AIBA's withdrawal of the Russian Boxing Federation (RBF) as the hosts last month.

The 2007 World Boxing Championships will be the first Olympic qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
