QINGDAO: China Netcom has vowed to build the world's most advanced telecommunications network for the Sailing Regatta of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Qingdao, a coastal city of East China's Shandong Province, will host the regatta and China Netcom (CNC), a leading fixed-line carrier in the country, is an Official Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

General manager of CNC's Qingdao Branch Wang Zhili said his company was well prepared to provide secure and highly efficient services including high-speed networks, broadband access and high-tech systems during the regatta.

The company has invested heavily in planning and infrastructure at the sailing base and related facilities.

The telecom facilities include trunk telecom lines, a landing station for the East Asia Crossing (EAC) submarine cable system and an upgrade of the IP's local network and main exchange stations.

A newly laid submarine cable linking the Qingdao landing station with the EAC submarine cable system, for instance, has a transmission capacity of 40G.

As the northernmost landing site for China, the Qingdao landing station has halved the distance between Chinese cities and that of Japan and South Korea. Therefore, the submarine cable system will guarantee high quality, live audio/video transmission for the sailing regatta of the Games to the world.

Zang Aimin, executive vice-president of the Sailing Committee of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, said that the landing of the EAC submarine cable system in Qingdao ensured a highly advanced digital coverage.

China Netcom Qingdao Branch is also the only local telecom operator to have tested the TD-SCDMA network, China's third generation (3G) mobile telecommunication technology.

Wang said Qingdao had the largest and most complicated test network among three across the country.

To date, the company has completed construction of the 3G business platforms.

Wang said that being the fixed line telecommunication partner of the Sailing Regatta of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games had also helped his company raise its profile in the city.

This has helped it accelerate the launch of more new products covering government and community information services, call centers for leading local and international companies, and information services for remote rural areas as well as small and medium enterprises.
