China's 24-year-old Olympic gold medalist Yang Wenjun won an Olympic quota in Duisburg by snatching a bronze in the men's C-1 500m, 0.3 seconds behind gold-medal-winner Andreas Dittmer of Germany.

Team China also qualified for the men's C-2 500m and the women's K-4 500m.

China has even drafted in international coaching legend Josef Capousek to bolster its chances.

Capousek, who led Germany to 17 Olympic gold medals during his long tenure as national captain, has been coaching China's kayaking team since the 2004 Athens Games.

Canadian coach Marek Ploch, who helped Meng Guanliang and Yang Wenjun to their photo-finish win over Cuban and European opponents in Athens, has also returned to guide the pair after almost three years apart.

Slalom specialists will have another chance to test the water at the Shunyi venue in April.
