Driving license examiners' corruption threatens all

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-02-06 20:37

It has been suggested that officers from the vehicle administration office should not work as driving license examiners. The job should be done by a more professional third party, says an article in the China Business News. Excerpts:

A vehicle administration office in Zhanjiang city, Guangdong province, is said to be involved in a corruption scandal. The 39 examiners in charge of driving license exams allegedly accepted more than 21 million yuan ($3.4 million) in bribes from examinees.

Being a driving license examiner in Zhanjiang now seems like a good job after it was revealed that all examinees are supposed to pay the examiners to pass the test.

The office's director has been detained for investigation for allowing the hidden rules to develop into a universal phenomenon.

This corruption case also indicates that there is no supervision for vehicle administration officers at all. Although their department's level is very low in the bureaucratic totem, their duties are related to the security of almost everyone in the society.
