Protecting Chinese citizens in Ghana

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-06-07 20:28

Ghana has arrested 124 Chinese citizens on suspicion of illegal gold mining, as Beijing News looks at the case (excerpts below).

"They used AK-47s to fire at our hiding places!" one worker said after he escaped from a crackdown in Ghana of illegal Chinese goldminers. The quote is making headlines in the Chinese press. Maybe they were "illegally working", as the Ghana government said, but the police should treat them better.

Both sides are at fault.

Most of the Chinese digging goldmines in Ghana hold travel visas, not employment permits. Besides, there are reports that some Chinese workers are not behaving properly.

If that's true, then the Chinese citizens need to correct their behavior first.

The government should take action to protect its citizens, while the workers need to behave properly.
