During her visit to China, Park Geun-hye, president of the Republic of Korea, proposed to return the remains of Chinese soldiers that died in the Korean War. This gesture could help heal historical scars, said an article in the Beijing News (excerpts below).

The war that happened on the Korean Peninsula more than half a century ago took a heavy toll from both China and the Republic of Korea.

Today the countries are good friends with mutual increasing trade, but the war still casts a shadow.

Chinese tradition cherishes the burial of the dead, and pays special respect to those who gave their lives for national defense.

International practice also requires former belligerents to treat the remains of their enemies with respect.

Sometimes returning and accepting the remains of those who fell can even promote diplomatic relations.

Park’s gesture should be welcomed.

The ROK is showing its goodwill toward China. This is deeply appreciated.
