I have one daughter studying at MIT and I sacrifice a lot to pay her tuition, hoping one day she comes back to the motherland with something new she learned and for the benefit of China. I feel what Chen Tianqiao did was extremely unpatriotic by giving so much money to a lost cause such as Caltech; that could have served to pay scholarships to eligible Chinese students for study in the US.
