Speed limits problematic for electric scooters
Electric scooters are parked on a sidewalk in Zhengzhou, the capital of Central China's Henan province, in this file photo taken Sept 22, 2010. There are currently more than 500,000 electric scooters on the city's streets, and more than 100 million such scooters used nationwide. In an announcement issued on March 18, 2011, the Chinese government asked regional authorities to ban the use of electric scooters whose speed exceeds 20 kilometers per hour, the acceptable speed limit prescribed by the national standard for electric scooters. Aiming to overhaul the electric scooter industry and improve road safety, the national standard is believed to rule out most of the electric scooters travelling in the country and will affect numerous manufacturers' prospects if it's enforced.
