Mummy discovered in Egypt

A wooden coffin containing a linen-wrapped mummy covered in cartonnage is seen in this undated handout picture released by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities on April 12, 2009. The coffin was found recently by an Egyptian archaeological mission inside a necropolis consisting of 53 rock-cut tombs dating to the Middle (ca. 2061-1786 BC) and New (ca. 1569-1081 BC) Kingdoms and the 22nd Dynasty (ca. 931-725 BC) in the southeastern part of the pyramid field of Illahun in Faiyum, Egypt. The necropolis was discovered along with the charred remains of a number of coffins that were probably burned during the Coptic Period. These coffins were found with 15 painted masks, amulets and clay pots. [Agencies] |
