SEOUL: South Korean residents in Haiti all survived the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti, while the government is planning to send humanitarian aid to the Caribbean country in shambles, the government said Thursday.

"Some 70 South Koreans have been confirmed to be all alive," said Kim Young-sun, a foreign minister spokesman.

South Korea plans to provide humanitarian aid worth $1 million to Haiti, which includes emergency supplies and rescue workers, Kim added.

The move came after the small Caribbean country on Tuesday was struck by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude estimated at 7.0, followed by a series of aftershocks.

Seoul established an emergency center in the Dominican Republic, which neighbors Haiti on the Hispaniola Island in the Caribbean, shortly after the massive quake hit the traditionally disaster- prone country.

The government will maintain a close eye on situations in Haiti to protect South Korean nationals there, Kim said.
