HOUSTON - One person died after a small plane crashed and burst into flames in the US state of Oklahoma on Sunday, local media reported.

The crash happened Sunday afternoon near a heavily wooded area in Owasso, a city located in northeast Oklahoma, local media Tulsa World reported.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman George Brown told Tulsa World authorities have confirmed that one person has died in the crash. No injuries were reported on the ground.

Brown said it was possible there was more than one fatality in the crash, but authorities had only seen evidence of one. Authorities haven't release the identity of the victim.

Witnesses described the plane as a white, twin engine plane. Local TV footage showed black smoke billowing from the wreckage scene.

According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the plane is A Mitsubishi MI-2 twin turboprop. It was registered to Intermountain Powersports Inc. of Salt Lake City.

According to FlightAware, a flight tracking website, the plane took off from Salina, Kansas and was en route to Tulsa International Airport on a 43-minute flight.

There is no word yet on what caused the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were on the scene to investigate Sunday night.
