Organized by the World Beauty Organization, Miss United States Intercontinental (MUSI) 2014 was held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center on Sunday in Alexandria, Virginia. As a national preliminary to the Miss Intercontinental Pageant, this year MUSI for the first time welcomed an Asian state title holder, Miss California USI, Selena Du, a 20-year-old journalism student at Columbia University. Du is an Asian American and immigrant who came to the US at 15. Du said that for such a big Asian community as the US has, Asian girls rarely stand forward and represent themselves. "Standing on the international stage, I think I am making a change," Du said. Michael McBride, national director for Miss United States Intercontinental, said the program embraces diversity. "We are looking for people who are comfortable in their own skin," said McBride. "Our country offers so much diversity, and we would like to showcase that in the international level."
