China marks new path for global economy, politics at G20 summit: Mexican expert

Xinhua | Updated: 2016-09-22 15:26

MEXICO CITY - As host of the recent G20 summit, China has shown a new path for world economy and international politics, a Mexican political science expert told Xinhua in a recent interview.

"China presented the foundations of what is going to be the new structure of international politics and the foundations of a new path towards international trade and finance," said Ignacio Martinez Cortes, a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

At the summit, held in Hangzhou in early September, G20 leaders came together to discuss ways to spur the flagging global economy and promote equitable and inclusive growth.

China's political stability, coupled with its economic weight, strengthens its role as a global guide, said the academic.

"China is marking the path in the global context, both in terms of economy and politics, given its national power. And national power comes from a strong internal market," Martinez said.

Beijing also demonstrated its leadership by choosing to focus the summit on matters of global concern, such as combating climate change, which is among the sustainable development goals prioritized by the United Nations, the professor said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his?US counterpart Barack Obama ratified the Paris Agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions the day before the summit, setting an important example of global cooperation for other countries, Martinez added.
