What they said about the presidential election results

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2016-11-10 13:41

"I was shocked by the result. Even on Tuesday morning, I though Clinton would win the election for sure. This reflects how deep the social problems are and I fail to perceive the anger of the Americans towards the status quo. Now I'm worried about the future. I don't know what will happen to America and the world."

Yixian Cui, a businessman in Santa Clara County, California, where 73.22 percent of the voters cast their ballot for Clinton, including Cui.

"Neither Clinton nor Trump lives up to my expectation of a president. Apparently, some of Clinton's behaviors run counter to the laws and ethics, such as the controversies surrounding the Clinton Foundation and her emails. As a chronic politician, she should know clearly the line. As to Trump, his speech and behavior give away his weakness and problems in personality, such as discrimination against minority groups and disrespect of women. The president should be not only a wise leader who makes right judgment but also a role model for the next generation."

Richard Yuan, a devoted Trump supporter who owns a boutique insurance agency in Fremont, California

"I was stunned to learn that so many Chinese Americans are voting for a manic, unstable candidate who might mess up with domestic and world affairs. As minorities, Chinese Americans should not join hands with a 'racist' president and pretend we are safe now. I simply don't have confidence in this guy."

Guoxian Lin, an IT engineer in Irvine, California. He managed a WeChat group of 500 members with a mission of "stopping Trump" and volunteered many hours to do phone banking for Hillary Clinton.

"I'm pretty devastated at the result of the election. I'm pretty blindsided and shocked that our country would support a candidate with this kind of values.

I think his campaign is embarrassing. I don't think he treated women or people of all kinds of backgrounds with any respect. I'm scared. I think he will probably undo a lot of the good work that Obama put in place in terms of protecting the environment. Climate and energy issues are what I care about most."

Meedan Kelly, research analyst, Washington

"I think Trump is the worst thing that can happen to America. He isn't for us. He didn't know what he was talking about (during his campaign). He's not for the people; he's for himself. He needs to put money into minority communities, help college, (and) help us get back on track as a nation."

Randi Smith, student, Washington

"It was likely that either presidential candidate would have adopted a more confrontational policy toward China. Given that the 'Asia Pivot' policy was adopted under Secretary of State Clinton, a Clinton presidency would have taken a harder line on issues such as the South China Sea and human rights. However, President-elect Trump's proposed China policies are even more likely to increase dramatically tensions between Washington and Beijing. Perhaps this is what the American electorate wants: policies of economic nationalism, isolationism, and anti-globalization. But they will have disastrous effects on our own economy. In addition to this, however, my overriding concern about a Trump presidency is that the United States will also pull back from areas that have seen real US-China cooperation on issues of global concern, such as climate change, piracy and global public health. In other words, either presidential candidate would have adopted policies that would have tested our bilateral ties. Trump's presidency will have global implications on issues that reach far beyond the two nations."

Mary E. Gallagher, professor, Department of Political Science Director, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan

June Chang and Lia Zhu in San Francisco, Linda Deng in Seattle, May Zhou in Houston, Yuan Yuan in Washington contributed to this quote list.
