Beijing's disease prevention authority said on Wednesday disinfection work in lockdown and controlled zones should be scientific and accurate to avoid excessive disinfection, which could lead to environmental contamination and damage of items.

As an increasing number of communities have been re-designated from locked down to controlled zones and many zones have had control measures lifted, disinfection work in those areas has drawn public attention.

Liu Xiaofeng, deputy director of the Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said at a news conference on Wednesday the key disinfection areas are places hands frequently contact, such as handrails, elevator buttons and public toilets.

"Outdoor air disinfection is not necessary," he said. "Green belts, roads and the outside of buildings don't need large-scale disinfection, either."
