Manuals and achievements of Shanghai's urban construction were showcased in the Shanghai Manual promotion event held in the east wing of Shanghai Library on Tuesday.

Co-hosted by Shanghai Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development and Management Commission, Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, and Shanghai Library, the event aims to promote the Shanghai Manual - A Guide for Sustainable Urban Development in the 21st Century· 2022 Annual Report.

The Shanghai Manual 2022 was released at this year's World Cities Day and the Second SDG Cities Global Conference in Shanghai on Oct 31.

Themed "The Localisation of the Goals for Sustainable Development", the manual selected some of the best practices in the fields of society, economy, culture, environment and governance. It includes 21 cases, six of which are from China, selected out of over a hundred candidates submitted from around the world.

"Each case in the Shanghai Manual tries to tell a good story about a city, and each case tries to restore the decision making process of the solution as much as possible. The in-depth analysis of the experience of each case by scholars is beneficial to convey the successful concept and avoid failures to urban governors," said Yang Rongbin, chief expert of the expert group of Shanghai Manual 2022.

The two case studies from Shanghai are stories of architecture revealing culture through historical buildings. One of the Shanghai cases is about how century-old brands in its Huangpu district pass on the best of traditional culture and grow in new and creative ways. The other demonstrates efforts in the Yangpu district to support the installation of elevators in old residential buildings.

To highlight Shanghai's distinctive achievements in sustainable urban development, two more cases are included in a special column, such as the landscape upgrading of the East China University of Political Science and Law along the Suzhou Creek.
