6.62m cross-border trips recorded over New Year's holiday

A total of 6.62 million cross-border trips were made by Chinese and foreign nationals during the New Year's Day holiday, the National Immigration Administration announced on Sunday.

The holiday, which ran from Thursday to Saturday, recorded an average of about 2.21 million daily trips, a year-on-year increase of 28.6 percent. The daily peak of cross-border travel occurred on Thursday, hitting 2.265 million trips.

Of the total, 3.36 million trips were made by mainland residents, up 39.1 percent year-on-year; 2.42 million by residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, an increase of 15.9 percent from the same period last year; and 828,000 by foreign nationals, marking an increase of 29.8 percent year-on-year.

Among inbound foreign nationals, 292,000 entered China under visa-free policies, representing a 35.8 percent year-on-year growth.

In addition, authorities inspected a total of 283,000 inbound and outbound flights, vessels, trains and vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 11.4 percent.
