US report on China's military rejected
By Sun Shangwu (China Daily)
Updated: 2005-07-21 06:07

He said the US had "grossly interfered in China's internal affairs and sowed discord in relations between China and other countries."

Interference from the US was described by Yang as a serious violation of the basic norms of international relations as well as of the principles set out in three China-US joint communiques.

According to Yang, China's increased defence spending has mainly been used to improve living conditions for soldiers and officers of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The PLA also upgraded some weapons in order to "deal with the complicated international situation, safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity," he said. This is the right of China as a sovereign country, and other nations do not have the right to intervene, Yang added.

China's military expenditure was US$25.5 billion last year, compared with America's US$455.9 billion, 17.8 times China's military budget. Per capita military spending by the US is 77 times that of China, Yang said.

"What right does the US have to make indiscreet remarks on China's national defence policy?" he asked.

Yang said military exchanges between China and other countries do not target any third country.

On the question of Taiwan, Yang said China firmly opposes any form of interference from any foreign country in its internal affairs.

The Chinese Government adheres to the policy of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems," but will not tolerate "Taiwan independence," Yang reiterated.
