Severe thunderstorms and hailstorms have caused widespread flight delays and cancellations at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport on Monday, affecting thousands of travelers across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

As of 2:30 pm, Baiyun International Airport had canceled over 120 inbound and outbound flights, with more than 390 delayed, and Shenzhen Baoan reported 90 cancellations, over 310 delays, and seven diversions, according to the airports. Flights to and from East, Central, and North China were particularly affected. Both airports said they proactively adjusted schedules to mitigate the impact during peak periods.

China Southern Airlines issued a large-scale flight delay yellow alert in Guangzhou from 9:30 am to 11:59 pm on Monday. A passenger, Zhou, whose flight from Guangzhou to Wuhan was delayed, said she opted for a full refund under the airline's rebooking and cancellation policy.

High-speed and intercity railway services in the region were also disrupted due to the severe weather, according to local railway authorities.

The city of Guangzhou issued an orange thunderstorm alert for all 11 districts on Monday morning and an orange hail alert for nine districts, including Yuexiu. The city's meteorological department warned that thunderstorm conditions would continue into Tuesday.
