John: No. I-- I don't have that one. My savior complex takes on a completely different form.
Hansen: I heard what happened and well, I-- I wanted to write and I tried you at MacArthur's but you'd left, and I just...
John: This is Helinger's old office.
Hansen: Yeah. Yeah, I stole it from him.
John: Seems that you won after all, Martin.
Hansen: They were wrong, John. No one wins. Please, please have a seat. God, it's so good to see you. What brings you back to Princeton?
Charles: John? John, I'm sorry, but you have to tell him. Tell him you're a genius. You're a genius, John! Tell him your work is critical. John, please!
John: Is there any chance that you could ignore what I just did?
Hansen: Of course, what are old friends for?
John: Is that what we are, Martin? Friends?
Hansen: John, of course. Of course. We always have been.
John: Alicia and I think that-- That fitting in, being part of a community, might do me some good. That a certain level of attachment, familiar places, familiar people, might help me... elbow out these… these certain delusions that I have. It's a lot to ask, and now that I'm here, I'm quite certain that you will just say no. But I was wondering if I couldhang around.
Hansen: Huh. Will you be needing an office?
John: No. No, I could just work out of the library.
Man: Well, this guy tries to wander into the library, but he doesn't have I.D.
這里的take on 表示“呈現 to acquire (an appearance, for example) as or as if one's own,假裝”,比如:Over the years he has taken on the look of a banker.
3. Is there any chance that you could ignore what I just did?
Is there any chance (that…) Is there any chance of meeting the professor? 這句話也可以簡化成“Any chance of meeting the professor?”
4.What are old friends for?
這句話本來是“What are friends for?”,因為Nash 和Hansen認識多年,所以Hansen就說“What are old friends for?”
“What are friends for?”,意思是“朋友本來就是這樣的”,表面上這是一個問句,問“朋友是做什么的”,但其實它是一個陳述句。
A: Thanks for keeping an eye on my plants while I was out of town.
B: Hey, what are friends for?
5. elbow out
He elbowed me out of the way.
to elbow one's way through a crowd He elbowed his way through the crowd towards the rostrum.
6. It's a lot to ask “這個要求太過分了。”
7. hang around
意思是“to spend time idly; loiter 閑蕩”,比如:Every afternoon they could be found hanging around the mall.
