As the year's biggest cold wave so far swept across Chongqing this week, the average daily temperature across its 39 districts and counties fell by 7 to 10 C, according to the city's meteorological bureau. In response, Chongqing Zoo has crafted "winter warmth packages" to care for its assorted inhabitants. [Photo by Zhang Xiufeng/For chinadaily.com.cn]

The zoo's nutritionists have adjusted the animals' diets to align with their specific dietary needs. For carnivores, the feed is supplemented with high-calorie ingredients for extra winter energy. Herbivores have received additional protein and fiber-rich feed to bolster their cold resistance. Across the board, extra vitamins and minerals are incorporated to ensure all animals receive the necessary nutrition during the colder months.

Since the onset of winter, the zoo has conducted inspections of its facilities where heating equipment is vital. These inspections focus on checking electrical circuits, distribution boxes, and load capacities to address any fire or electrical safety hazards.
